The Old County Tops Fell Race
Held in May, The Old County Tops Fell Race is a 37 mile/10,000ft. event (distance and climb dependant on whether you go the right or wrong way). The Race starts in Great Langdale and takes in the tops of Helvellyn, Scafell Pike and Coniston after which the survivors are fed and watered.
This year’s race will be held on Saturday 19th May 2012
Final Information 9 May 2012
Note: Information shown below is to be considered more up to date than any conflicting information which may appear in the rules and regulations

This is being written with just under one week to go until race day. We have just topped 100 entries, which is a record. Its great to see the popularity of the event increase from year to year and it certainly helps to make our efforts seem to be worthwhile. We do have some spaces left and will be accepting entries up until race day assuming that the maximum is not reached beforehand (please email me to check). The increased numbers does add to the pressure on the catering team, particularly at Wythburn, so please go easy on them. They will be doing their best and service will be with a smile as always.

In relation to the event can I please draw your attention to the following:

  1. 1. Car parking will be available for a small charge in the field in front of the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. Please bring change if possible. Alternatively, if you are a National Trust member you can park in their car park which is nearby. There are toilet facilities in the National Trust Car park.
  2. Registration will be held in the bar of the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. Registration will be open from 06:30 hrs.
  3. The race will start in the car park on the opposite side of the road from the parking field. The race will start at 08:00 hrs prompt. Can all competitors please aim to be close to the start by 07:45 hrs.
  4. Kit checks will be carried out at registration before numbers are issued. All competitors will be expected to carry at least the minimum kit listed in the rules and regulations. Additional clothing is recommended in the event of poor weather.
  5. There should be sufficient water at Wythburn car park and Cockley Beck for competitors to fill up water bottles, but please note that the water supply at these locations is restricted to what we can carry in the van and there will be others behind you.
  6. In the event of hot weather conditions (I wish) it is essential that competitors make every effort to keep themselves hydrated and this includes using some form of isotonic drink.
  7. The race finishes in the parking field – once through the gate you can relax.
  8. Prizes will be awarded in the field at convenient times after sufficient numbers of competitors have finished. Please come to see me if you have to leave before prizes have been awarded.
  9. Can perpetual trophies please be returned to the Achille Ratti hut, Bishopscale, Langdale or hand them in at registration. Let me know if you have a perpetual trophy and are unable to get it to us.
  10. All finishers will receive a race T-shirt. Only giving T-shirts to finishers is a long standing race rule. If you don’t manage to complete please come back next year and try again!
  11. Additional prizes in the form of a pair of La Sportiva shoes for the each member of the winning male and female teams will be awarded this year. We would like to thank La Sportiva for donating these prizes, and hope that they will be able to offer similar support in the future.
  12. Commemorative mugs will be awarded to the following finishers:
  • Men 1st, 2nd, 3rd
  • V80 1st, 2nd, Mixed V80 1st, Ladies V80
  • V90 1st, 2nd Mixed V90 1st, Ladies V90
  • V100 1st, 2nd Mixed V100 1st, Ladies V100
  • V120 1st, 2nd Mixed V120 1st, Ladies V120
  • Mixed 1st, 2nd
  • Ladies 1st, 2nd
    • A club team prize will be awarded to the fastest three teams from the same club.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries at this stage (chrisandtash@talktalk.net).

Don’t forget to tell your friends about the New Dungeon Ghyll Fell Race (3.5mls, 2100ft) which is taking place on the same day and from the same venue (start at 12.30 hrs).

“Please pass on my thanks together with the other Dallam guys for yet anther challenging 3 OCT. I won't pretend I enjoyed most of it, but the turn from the Old Man home was brilliant! The thought of the hot soup at the end was further motivation to finish. Great marshalling as ever, especially those guys on the tops.”

“Can I take this opportunity to say thank you once again for a superbly organised and friendly OCT race last weekend. A special mention must go to the marshalls at Old Man of Coniston who had a bit of weather to face! See you all next year for the best and most eagerly awaited food of the year - Cockley Beck.”
