Notes from Tyn Twr (by John & Ann McGonagle)

A very successful BBQ weekend was held in June and members took to the waters around Anglesey in sea kayaks and were rewarded with a catch of mackerel to cook on the BBQ.

Maintenance weekend

Please note the maintenance weekend has been changed to:
31st October/1st November 2009.

We are hoping to:
  • Erect a new wood store and coal bunker
  • Paint the lounge and ladies bathroom
  • Tidy up the garden
Your reward for your efforts is good company and your supper on Saturday evening on a Halloween theme! Please contact John McGonagle 01254 265574 to book a bed.

As you are all aware we rely on you the members to help with general maintenance, gardening, wood cutting, painting etc. as a volunteer at all the huts at least once a year.
Hut wardens do jobs on a voluntary basis almost weekly and ask members to assist where necessary on particular tasks. This is done to keep the huts in a good standard of repair in order that you can enjoy time away doing your favourite pastime on the fells in clean comfortable surroundings. The cost of staying at the huts is kept at a very reasonable rate and this can only be done if we all play our part. Please when you see it is a maintenance meet contact the warden and offer your assistance - all of us has a talent at something. Large jobs requiring professional expertise is considered by the Committee and arrangements are made when and where necessary to handle this work.

There are a few places left for Christmas at Tyn Twr on the weekend of 12th/13th December. This is a fully catered meet and booking is essential. Saturday there will be an organised walk for those wishing to join us and traditional Christmas dinner will be served in the evening.

Annual General Meeting 2009 and Mass for deceased members

The annual general meeting will take place on Saturday 14th November 2009, at the Village Hall, Chapel Stile at 1.30pm and to which all members are invited. A copy of the agenda is enclosed with this newsletter.
The Chairman and Vice Chairman have come to the end of their term of office and nominations are invited for these posts (see agenda). Following the AGM Mgr. Slattery will say Mass for the deceased members of the club at the Chapel at Bishopscale at approximately 3.30pm. Following Mass there is an invitation for members to share a meal in the hut at 5.00 pm. In order to assist the catering crew could members intending to stay for the meal please contact Arthur Daniels on 01706 819706.

No annual dinner

The Management Committee took the decision to cancel the arrangements made for the annual dinner at the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, following information that numbers wishing to attend the event would be low. Alan Kenny has organised the dinner for the last 20 years and our thanks go to him for the work involved in this task. There is a disappointment amongst some members about the decision to cancel the dinner. The Committee would like to hear from all the membership as to whether we reinstate this tradition from next year. Do you want an annual get together? What would you like to do? Have you any thoughts, ideas of an event, are you prepared to plan and organise a celebration? Please contact the secretary on 01254 265574 with your comments.

Membership Secretary’s Notes

MEMBERSHIP FEES are due to be paid by 1st October. If you do not pay by direct debit please send your subscription cheque to me, payable to ARCC. The amount due is £25 unless you are a student under 21, then the amount payable from 1st October 2009 is £12.
If I have not received your subscription by 31st December 2009 your name will be deleted from the membership list. There would then be an additional charge of £25 to reinstate your membership on top of your £25 membership fee. The management committee has introduced this charge because of the work involved chasing late payers last year.
If you normally pay by direct debit but have changed your bank account details in the last 12 months and not advised me, your direct debit may not be collected.
If you have not received your membership renewal card by mid October, check your bank statement to see if your direct debit has been paid.
Members who requested a direct debit form to pay their 2009/10 fees but have not returned the form to me – there are 48 forms still not returned – will have to pay this years fees by cheque.

PROBATIONARY MEMBERS There seems to be quite a lot of confusion regarding the rights of probationary members. Please be aware that as a probationary member you cannot sign in guests or children at the huts. Please read carefully the latest rules which are to be updated at the AGM on Saturday 14th November 2009. Any member who does not have access to the internet, can request a copy from me.

JUNIOR MEMBERSHIP Junior membership has now been reinstated. Any FULL MEMBER who has been a full member for more than 18 months, can apply to have their child/children (under 18) made junior members. The fee is an initial one off payment of £10 per child. When applying please give your child’s full name, address and date of birth and whether they are catholic or non catholic. I have written to all existing junior members who are now over 18 asking if they wish to apply for full membership. If you or your child have received one of these letters please can I ask you to reply as to whether full membership is required or not, and then I can update the membership list. Any JUNIOR member who wishes to apply for FULL MEMBERSHIP when they are 18,are requested to do so in writing , either prior to their 18th birthday or a maximum of 6 months after their 18th birthday . If their application is after that period of time , then the applicant for full membership will have to serve the regular probationary period that is a requirement of any new member.

Annual Accounts

If anyone would like hard copies of the Annual Accounts, or have them emailed before the AGM, please contact Jean Lochead (Treasurer) on 01484 687030

Paying by cheque

Due to additional bank charges and the inconvenience incurred by the club when dealing with dishonoured (bouncing) cheques, there will be a £10 admin fee added to the amount still owed.

Contributions to the website e.g. photo's etc.

If you've any photo's / articles you have of club events, or anything else that you think would be a useful, or simply entertaining addition to the website, contact Alex.

Derek Price Memorial Grisedale Horseshoe Race

Many thanks to all those who helped on the day to make the event such a success.
I received many compliments both on the day and afterwards from competitors expressing their appreciation of the efforts of everyone involved. I am sure that you will agree that it is nice to know that people do not just take the race for granted. Once again thanks to everyone.
Alan Kenny
